hakama

The hakama (袴) is wide pleated trousers (seven pleats, five in front and two behind), fitted with a stiff back (koshi ita) . It was traditionally worn by the nobles of medieval Japan, and in particular the samurai.

It is currently worn by practitioners of Aikido, Iaido, Kendo, referee in Koshiki and others.
